The board is generated from the breakdown

Scene headings and action lines become numbered shots with camera size, angle and movement. The frames are rendered from that structure, so the board matches the script rather than a re-description of it.

Each shot already knows which characters are in it, so the right reference images go with the render without being picked per frame. That is the whole difference between a board that holds a cast and one that drifts.

Two things called a storyboard generator

One is a storyboarding application with an image model attached: a board view, frame notes, versioning, client comments, approval status, export to PDF and animatic. Boords is the clearest example and it is a genuinely good piece of software — the AI is the newest part of a tool whose real job is getting a board signed off.

The other is a render pipeline where the board is an intermediate artefact. The frames exist so you can approve framing and casting cheaply before paying for motion, and then they are fed to a video model. That is what this page describes.

The distinction decides what you should be comparing. If your bottleneck is a client who needs to approve a board, buy the first kind. If your bottleneck is that the board has to become footage, the second.

Boords' credit meter is more generous than its headline number suggests: its documentation states that generating preview variations is free and a credit is only consumed "when you choose to insert an image into your frame". Boords does not publish its free-tier limits.

What "consistent characters" means in each

Both tools use the same underlying mechanism — a reference image passed into the generation — and differ in who does the attaching.

Boords markets it as automatic: "Build your cast once and reuse them across every scene… keeps characters consistent from frame to frame." Its own documentation is more precise, and worth reading before you buy on the marketing line: "The AI doesn't automatically remember previous frames. Writing 'the same character' or 'the location from frame 3' in your prompt won't work. You must attach the reference image for the AI to see it." There is even an FAQ headed "Why aren't my images consistent?" That is a real feature with a manual step, not a broken one — but on a forty-frame board it is forty attachments.

Here the attachment is derived. The shot list already records which characters appear in each shot, because it was broken out of a script that named them. At render time each frame is dispatched with exactly those references and no others, so a character who is not in the scene does not consume a reference slot.

Neither approach is magic. A weak reference image — low resolution, heavily filtered, three-quarters occluded — gives the model less to hold onto either way, and that shows up two frames later.

What a board costs to generate

One keyframe per shot. Credits are a flat $0.01, so a board is priced per frame rather than per month — which is cheaper for occasional boards and more expensive than a subscription if you are making them all day.

Only the three models cleared for reel work are listed — a board has to hold a cast, which needs a model that takes character references. Script and shot-breakdown stages are text and cost a rounding error against these.

From board to footage

This is where the two categories genuinely part company. Boords ends at an animatic, and is explicit about what that is: "a timed sequence of storyboard frames", with per-frame durations, transitions, uploaded audio and optional subtitles, exported as MP4. No motion is generated. For previsualisation and pacing that is exactly right, and it is faster than rendering.

If you want the frames to move, the board here is already the input. Each approved keyframe goes to a video model with its character references attached, and the shots concatenate in order. Nothing is re-described to a second tool, which is the step where continuity usually gets lost.

Cost, for the same twelve shots: the board is $1.20 on GPT Image 2, and rendering them at eight seconds each is 941 credits ($9.41) on PixVerse C1 or 1,613 credits ($16.13) on Kling O3.

Worth saying plainly: a board is not always the cheap step on the way to something else. Sometimes the board *is* the deliverable, and stopping there is the correct call.

Styles, and what free covers

Comic, manga, cartoon, animation and photoreal boards are all a matter of which image model and what style direction you give it — the style is set once at the story stage and carried into every frame, rather than re-prompted per panel. Qwen Image 2.0 is the one to reach for when panels need readable text on signage or title cards.
