How is reference-to-video different from image-to-video?

Image-to-video animates forward from one frame you supply. Reference-to-video is given the subject and composes a new shot around it — which is what you want when shot four is a different angle in a different room.

Kling is cheaper and uses an Elements format built around one frontal image plus supporting refs. Vidu takes a flat set of references. Both hold a character; Kling costs about half as much per clip.

Does it fail over if the provider is down?

Yes. Vidu Q3 is one of two reel video models whose reference format has been verified on both of our providers, so a reference-carrying request can move between them without losing the character.

Vidu Q3 generates video from reference images rather than from a single start frame. That distinction is the whole point in a reel: a start-frame model only knows what shot one looked like, while Vidu is handed the character sheet itself and can therefore keep that person recognisable in a shot it has never seen.
